The JHM Foundation has been supporting the disabled in and around Nyeri for years by providing wheelchairs to the poorest.
However, parents of disabled children often do not have the financial resources to provide for the education of their child with disabilities. This was reason for the JHM Foundation to work with the parents and with the help of the local network of disabled people in Nyeri and the surrounding area to look for opportunities to enable education for learning disabled children. In the future, JHM aims to create training places for these young disabled people in wood and metalworking workshops and in the sewing workshop after school.
In October 2024 and January 2025, fieldwork was carried out in Kinunga and Wamgana, rural areas of Nyeri, to identify the “needs and demands” among the local population. 36 children were identified. 16 children were successfully placed in various schools (7). There is no daytime education for disabled children in Kenya. The schools are therefore boarding schools where, in addition to education, physiotherapy is also provided. Furthermore, beds and bedding were purchased for 10 children who slept on the floor in huts. Anti-epileptics were provided to 16 children who no longer took medication due to lack of money. 14 children’s wheelchairs were also purchased and adapted to their disability, and elbow crutches were provided.
